MEZZOFORTE. In global pop industry terms, jazz - funksters Mezzoforte would in 1983 have seemed rather an unlikely bunch to become the pioneers of a long awaited ´breaking of the ice´ for the desperately isolated musical community of Iceland. Mezzoforte indeed became the surprise hit makers of 1983 in Europe, with a single called Garden Party taken from an album fittingly titled Surprise Surprise! Due to the Anniversary Tour they present their best tracks on the new double cd compilation – personally choosen with special photos and linernotes in English. The band will be back with a new DVD in autum 2007.
The Brazilian Guitar tradition has a powerful newcomer. But, in spite of his tender 24 years (Louis) Marcel Powell, son of the great Baden Powell, born in Paris, isn’t exactly new in the music business. With his father he recorded twice. “Baden Powell and sons” when he was only 15 and “Afro-Brazilian suite” together with his brother the pianist Phillipe Baden. His first album “Samba Novo” was only released in Japan. “Aperto De Mao” is his fourth record, and it’s the first one he really identifies himself with. It was during his stay in Germany when Marcel decided to develop his own music career and “Aperto De Mao” is after some years the result of this. On his solo album he features compositions from Joao Bosco, Marcel Powell, Johnny Alf, Thelonious Monk/Cootie Williams, Horondino Silva and many more.
In “Aperto de Mao” Marcel Powell wanted to transmit the beauty of music, the feeling and also his ability with the instrument”. No doubt Marcel Powell’s album “Aperto de Mão has those three ingredients and confirms him as a new young Master of Brazilian guitar.

Run The Voodoo Down – Listen here Vol.2
The 2nd edition of the LISTEN HERE series, compiled by journalist MICHAEL MÖHRING, is dealing with Miles Davis’ landmark recording Bitches Brew, an album with a high profile which stands the test of time. Out of that stylistic revolution not only the fusion genre were born with groups like Weather Report, the Headhunters, Return To Forever, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, it also has set standards in the electronica (jazz) evolution for the following decades. This project is about the ‘post Miles electric jazz’ featuring outstanding trumpeters like Nils Petter Molvaer, Tim Hagans,
Russell Gunn, Erik Truffaz, and others who carry on and keep the flame.
Compiler Möhring on LISTEN HERE, Vol. 2: “There is no doubt that all the
artists on this compilation - RUN THE VOODOO DOWN - are deeply influenced by Bitches Brew and its following 70’s masterpieces Live Evil, Jack Johnson, or On The Corner. Besides the tracks I’ve picked up for this selection, there
is more interesting material in the vaults to produce probably a second volume. Innovators like Mark Isham, Palle Mikkelborg, Wadada Leo Smith or Toshinori Kondo are just some of them, which comes to my mind. They all did
great stuff in that style, creating ‘a new brew’.“
